“It’s not just a salon, it’s a torrid love affair” and after 20 years in the hairdressing industry, it still feels that way for Gloss Salon Director, David Moore.

David has experienced nearly all facets of hairdressing including National and State competitions, fashion and runway shows, session work, teaching, salon management, running Day Spas on-board cruise ships out of the U.K and U.S. “I soaked up all I could throughout my apprenticeship and having that strong knowledge base gave me invaluable experience”.

After his apprenticeship, David accepted a teaching position at a London training school followed by a year in the USA running salons and spas on board America’s super liners. The cruise ship experience unleashed a passion for business development and upon his return to Australia David began managing salons for David Jones and the Workshop Group. He also shared his knowledge with young apprentices in a teaching role with TAFE NSW.

A chance meeting with old friend Janet Hughes, creator and brains behind Sydney’s Fuss and Fusion Salons, saw David really hone his skills. David became an educator and later, a Director of the company which took him to New York and Europe. “Managing 50+ staff was extremely challenging and gave me immeasurable confidence and belief that I could now tackle the one thing I had not attempted-my own business. My main focus is making sure that our clients are looked after and that we are constantly evolving and producing great work”.

Producing great work seems to come naturally to David and his staff and the awards and recognition are a great indicator is their success. Australian Achievement Awards awards for Outstanding Hairdresser in 2006 and 2007 sit comfortably on the wall, as do numerous other hairdressing and small business awards. David is no stranger to television either having spent 2 years as the resident “hair guru” on Channel 7’s The Morning Show. “Being the hair expert on The Morning Show has afforded me invaluable media experience and I have become at ease in front of the camera. My role with The Morning Show, hosted by Larry Emdur and Kylie Gilles, consisted mostly of Makeover segments along with special hairdressing segments”. His involvement with the program has led to regular features in various magazines, newspapers and trade magazines such as Instyle and the Australian Hairdressers Journal.

2011 has seen the Gloss team celebrate 5 years in business and contribute to Rosemount Fashion Week styling for the labels Ginger and Smart and Bowie. David has also begun writing for various media outlets and blogs.

When asked about the Gloss philosophy, David replies, “We endeavour to remain client focused, driven by education and innovation and consistently striving for better results. I want our clients to feel that we’re genuinely interested in their needs through the experience they have and the results achieved - actions speak louder than words”.
